Many Children Struggle in School

When children struggle in school or to learn new information, it can be stressful for both the child and family. Academic and social issues at school are some of the most common reasons children are referred for therapy and testing. Understanding how a child learns and his or her specific strengths and weaknesses can help parents, teachers and an experienced child psychologist develop the most effective interventions for the home and school settings.

Psycho-Educational Evaluations Are Tools For Success

Psycho-educational testing provides an in-depth look at your child’s cognitive and academic strengths and weaknesses. You will gain a better understanding of how your child processes information and works through difficult academic challenges. At Innovative Psychological Solutions, we offer individualized psycho-educational evaluations for children and teens experiencing learning challenges that interfere with their ability to perform in the academic setting. We can assess whether your child exhibits characteristics of an intellectual disability, learning disability, attention disorder and/or social emotional difficulties. Because each child is unique, our evaluations are individually tailored to assess areas such as:

  • cognitive ability
  • academic achievement (e.g., reading, math, writing)
  • visual and auditory processing
  • memory
  • visual-motor skills
  • executive functioning
  • attention
  • social emotional skills

Testing typically takes between 2-8 hours depending on the needs of your child. This is often conducted over a couple of sessions to ensure your child is performing at his or her best. Our evaluations are designed to meet the state requirements regarding the request of specialized accommodations within the schools. After your child’s evaluation is completed we’ll provide you with a comprehensive report, which includes recommendations and treatment options (when appropriate). We’ll sit down with you and your child for a follow-up meeting to discuss the results and to ensure that you understand the report and recommendations. We can also consult with teachers and/or other service provides to better support the development of your child.

You may feel testing is the right thing for your child, but still have questions and concerns…

I am concerned that my child will be misdiagnosed or labeled.

This very common concern is completely understandable. However, at Innovative Psychological Solutions, our goal is to provide you and your child with valuable information and not a label. Testing conducted by a professional allows you to fully understand your child’s unique strengths and weaknesses, as well as empowers you and others working with your child to better meet his or her needs. Research shows that the earlier potential weaknesses are identified and addressed, the better the long-term outcomes. Evaluations also help you to better understand how to help your child learn new concepts, maintain focus and concentration and reduce the day-to-day struggles.

Is testing worth the time and expense?

Although testing can be expensive, we encourage you to consider it as a worthwhile investment in the well-being and academic development of your child. Testing offers the opportunity for you to ensure that your child’s educational and social-emotional needs are met. We use state of the art assessment instruments and an individualized testing battery that provides a clear picture of your child and accurate diagnoses (when indicated).

How do I know if my child really even needs an evaluation or testing?

As parents we all want our children to feel successful and confident and achieve their maximum potential. At Innovative Psychological Solutions, our focus is on meeting the specific needs of your child by tailoring testing and interventions. We are happy to meet with you and discuss the specific needs of your child so you can make the best decision concerning how to proceed.
